 For over 15 years Alex Woodhouse has been a keen and passionate photographer. Being based in beautiful west Cornwall, he is only a stone`s throw from the coast. Being a self-taught photographer, Alex has built up his knowledge and experience through study and from working in the photographic industry. He has been particularly infenced by working for local newspapers, for Devon & Cornwall Police and now his work in the education sector at Truro College, where he is an art technician and part time photography tutor.

Having recently gone back to using analogue, chemical based techniques combined with images from his digital work, Alex creates contemporary cyanotype prints. 

“The process is a relatively simple one. I create digital negatives from my photos in Photoshop which are then printed on to acetate. I then coat art paper (Fabriano works best) with the cyanotype solution which is a mix of two chemicals and water. These are then allowed to air dry in the dark, when dry they become light sensitive."
After exposure to UV light the cyanotype is washed with water before drying.
"I then place the negative in contact with the paper, cover with glass and expose to UV light or sunlight. After about 10-15 min the print is then washed under water. The undeveloped chemicals wash off and the vivid cyan blue is left. I then dry them and we`re done. Each print is handmade.”
“Each print is handmade, so each print is an individual. All differ slightly in colour, contrast and look, and produce a truly unique Cornish product.”
